Spennymoor to Byers Green

The Spennymoor - Bishop Auckland line closed to passengers in 1952 (although occasional miners/football specials ran until 1963), and freight in 1966. Unlike the Bishop Auckland-Durham line it was mostly single track and I imagine had a very traditional branch line flavour. Unfortunately information on this line is quite hard to come by so I've had to make some educated guesses.

This set of screenshots shows the northern end of the line (Spennymoor - Byers Green); once I've made a bit more progress on the scenery on the southern end I'll show some shots on that bit too. I've used the BR Blue era in these shots as a "might have been" but I'm sure it would look just as good with an ex-NER G5 and a short rake of push-pull coaches... ;)

A ballast train traverses the double track section west of Spennymoor (where the portal terminating this part of the line is located) bound for Bishop Auckland.

Approaching Burnhouse Junction, where the NER Todhills branch (which served the original Byers Green station) used to diverge. The line to Bishop Auckland curves to the left.

Approaching the "new" Byers Green station.

Entering the avoiding line at Byers Green. From what I can tell from old maps this section was actually single track throughout, but I've added the avoiding line for operational flexibility.

Waiting for the road at Byers Green. From here to Coundon is again single track.

...and finally, someything a bit arty:

Next up: The line south to Coundon.

  1. looks great! I have some old images on that line but nothing that would help I don't think.

Looking forward to creating that line myself, a very popular walk in my younger days to Binchester.

  2. Hi Derek,

    Thanks!

There seems to be so little information on the Spennymoor line around, sadly.

I've only been able to unearth one photo of Coundon while the line was open (it's in the Darlington & South-West Durham "Railway Memories" book).

Byers Green is even trickier. The only photo I've found is a recent one of the very overgrown Byers Green platform with no sign of the original buildings. It's on the "Forgotten Relics" site at http://www.forgottenrelics.co.uk/stations/redundant.html. The one thing I will say for that one is that at least it confirms what type of bridge was in place at the southern end of the platform!

Looking back, Hunwick was far, far easier to research...

By the way, my grandparents lived in Binchester (on Peel Street, just opposite the store where they sold the white mice!) so I know the place quite well. I can even remember how it was before the council refurbished the place and replaced the outside loos and back yards with proper gardens and an inside bathroom, but it seems so long ago now...

  3. hi what would you like to know

  4. It's not yet in state suitable for downloading yet I'm afraid - I've currently got the line severed in the Shildon area while I lay out the trackwork for Shildon Yards.

My current thinking is that once basic landscaping and signalling is done there I'll upload it somewhere as a "work in progress". Note that you would need TC3 to load it. As some TRS2006 built-in assets are also used you'll also need to merge in the TRS2006 built-in assets.

As for info I'm looking for - basically any info you can offer might conceivably be useful (book references, detailed track layouts, signal box diagrams, period photos etc.). It all helps to gradually build the picture up and refine the level of detail in the simulation.

FWIW The Spennymoor line itself is now pretty much done (as far as Burnhouse Junction, where the route currently terminates). I'm currently working on the Shildon - Simpasture Junction stretch.

  8. The route as a whole is nowhere near completion yet (I've been distracted by little things like volunteering on my local heritage line recently!). However, the good news is that the Coundon-Byers Green section has now been broken out as a separate route and that's pretty much done. There are portals and a couple of sidings at either end, so it's pretty much self-contained.

Note that you will need TC3 (with TRS2006 built-in assets) to load it at present.

I'm also about to do some testing with TS2010, and early indications are that all the dependencies should be there if you have the Snc2009 add-on pack. That doesn't of course mean that all of the assets used are truly TS2010 friendly.

Once this activity has been completed I'm hoping to upload the route to the DLS.

Which versions of TRS are you using?
